As an online mentor to quite a handful of male teenagers who are struggling with purity
issues and are also dating, I have noticed a few trends. They like to keep their dating a secret
from their parents. And even if their parents are aware, most parents have no clue what
their kids do behind their backs.
Telling my students not to date or to break off from their relationship will never work but I do challenge
them to do one thing though. To keep their dating relationship transparent to their parents and be
committed to accountability.
Why?...Because...
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: 10 If one falls down, his friend
can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! 11 Also, if two lie down together,
they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend
themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecc. 4:9 - 12

Accountability is more than just coming clean, letting ourselves to be policed or sujecting
ourselves to extreme scrutiny. Accountability is really a form of mentoring, where a more mature
man or women can guide and lead the younger person to manoeuvre wisely and fruitfully in a relationship.
This does not apply to teenagers alone but to all young adults or anyone in any relationship.
Ideally all of us should be able to go to our parents, boys to their Dads, girls to their Mums.
But this is not always possible and it's sad. I have counseled christians who cannot even talk to
their parents!
To all parents on my mailing list, are your children able to come to you freely without ever feeling that
you are judging them, nagging them or controlling them?
Demonstrate to them the benefits by letting them see the lifestyle of a God-fearing spouse in a marriage.
To all the boys and girls on my list, if you truly love God and your partner, and you want nothing but
the best for your relationship, commit to finding an older couple to become your accountability partners,
give them permission to speak into your lives today.
